THE EASTERN WAY OF APPROACHING FERTILITY

NATURAL FERTILITY
Uby Muñoz has a special interest and experience in using acupuncture to promote pregnancy, childbirth and fertility including IVF enhancement and supporting assisted conception techniques. She has had specialised training in fertility and obstetrics and is a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network.

She works with couples providing natural fertility enhancement through acupuncture, nutrition, massage and lifestyle interventions. She looks at your reproductive system in relation to all the other systems of your body, and am able to tailor your treatment specifically to your individual diagnosis. She also works hand-and-hand with reproductive clinics in Barcelona to support couples who have chosen to undergo IVF and other ART to meet their fertility objectives. She is well-versed in conventional treatment of infertility.

To conceive and have a healthy pregnancy, you must have a free flow of Qi and blood throughout the body. An adequate supply of blood is required by a woman’s body to sustain a normal menstrual cycle, to successfully implant an embryo within the uterine lining, and to support a growing fetus and a healthy pregnancy. Through acupuncture we can raise your fertility potential by affecting the quality, quantity, balance, and flow of Qi and blood.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?
Couples given an “unexplained infertility” or “functional infertility”. In reality, many couples given unexplained reasons for not conceiving are not clinically infertile; they may simply not be in emotional or physical reproductive balance. Chinese Medicine helps to address this imbalance with skillful diagnosis and treatment plans to regulate your hormones to maximize your chances of falling pregnant.

Couples having difficulties who want to conceive naturally before trying IVF. This can be the result of female or male factors. PCOS, endometriosis, premature ovarian failure, abnormal or low sperm count and motility.

Couples wanting to maximize their chances with IVF or ICSI. For couples going through IVF, I provide preparatory treatments to help address any imbalances and strengthen your bodies to get the best possible outcomes. I provide treatments before you start your cycles, which can help to increase the blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. This helps to improve the quality and quantity of follicles produced by the ovaries, and increases the endometrial lining thickness, which provides a better chance of implantation. I also provide before-and-after acupuncture treatments for any procedures such as egg pickups and embryo transfers; research has found this to increase implantation and pregnancy.

HOW UBY CAN HELP?
I make individual diagnosis, check your medical history (including any blood tests and ultrasounds if necessary), check any current BBT charts (see link for more information), and check your tongue and pulse. I can provide lifestyle and dietary advice tailored to suit your needs. I understand that this can be a difficult and anxious time for couples, and I am here with my team to provide you with a great deal of care!

I have years of experience in helping couples to conceive successfully using specialist acupuncture techniques and tailored lifestyle plans.

Acupuncture enhances the success of IVF treatment

IVF & Acupuncture
The herbs used in Chinese Medicine are powerful and very effective. They can be used alone or in combination with acupuncture. A precise diagnosis is necessary to get 100% guaranteed results. The dried herbs can be administered as an infusion, a powder, or a capsule. All of these methods are completely effective. There are ancient formulas to treat different conditions.

Numerous studies have shown that acupuncture enhances the success of IVF treatment. A study in Germany found that women receiving acupuncture in conjunction with IVF experienced a 43% IVF implantation success rate compared to a 26% success rate for women receiving no acupuncture. Similarly another study in the United States at the University of Southampton and the city’s Princess Anne hospital concluded that ‘acupuncture around the time of embryo transfer achieves a higher live birth rate of 35% compared with 22% without active acupuncture’.

A recent meta-analysis (Manheimer E), published in February 2008 by the British Medical Journal, reviewed a number of acupuncture studies and had the conclusion that women undergoing IVF who also have acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer, have a substantially higher chance of conceiving than those who have no acupuncture.

I am well-versed in conventional treatment of infertility and work hand-and-hand with reproductive clinics in Barcelona to support couples who have chosen to undergo IVF and other ART to meet their fertility objectives. I combine evidence-based research protocols, western medical diagnostics, fertility acupuncture – and the accumulated knowledge of nearly 3000 years of Traditional Chinese Medicine – to bring the best of both worlds to help my patients fulfill their dream of starting a family.

How Acupuncture helps with IVF:
• improves the flow of blood to the uterus
• relaxes the uterus enhancing its receptivity
• calms the mind and the nervous system, thus helping to reduce stress responses that might otherwise inhibit implantation.
Treatment protocols
BEFORE IVF:
I recommend that you begin to receive weekly treatments up to three months before your embryo transfer to help prepare you and your body. Many couples fall pregnant naturally during this preparation period and others have a good chance of success the first time they try the IVF procedure along with my IVF support programme. Women who fall pregnant naturally during the IVF preparation period do not need to continue with IVF.

ON THE DAY OF YOUR EMBRYO TRANSFER:
I use the German protocol for IVF enhancement which consists of treating the woman with acupuncture right before and shortly after transfer of the embryo. This is extremely helpful and has been shown to be successful even if you have never received an acupuncture treatment previously.

My clinic is located is no further than 15 minutes from the IVF clinics. If you need transportation after your acupuncture treatment to get to the IVF clinic, I can arrange a taxi for you. Under certain circumstances I can also arrange a visit to treat you at your hotel, please contact me to discuss.

A safe and effective way to alleviate pregnancy discomfort

Pregnancy & Acupuncture
Pregnancy is a special time, a period of great transition that is full of joy and expectancy but it can also be a time of worry and anxiety when complications arise as they sometimes do. Acupuncture is a safe and effective form of health-care used to alleviate many of the physical discomforts experienced during pregnancy. Acupuncture can also help new mums prepare their body, mind and emotional self so they are as ready as possible for the birth of their baby and for an efficient post-natal recovery.

From 35 weeks, acupuncture is used to help encourage the baby to engage, to ripen the cervix and to prepare for an efficient delivery. It also strengthens mum’s body, mind and spirit to have an easy post-partum recovery.

There are many ways in which acupuncture can help you during pregnancy. There are specific points which are known to calm the mind and relieve anxiety (stress isn’t good for you or your baby). Acupuncture is deeply relaxing and helps to promote internal balance as well as an outwardly balanced perspective.

Acupuncture also helps with the increased production of blood and other fluids in pregnancy. Acupuncture can be used to help to build blood and improve the blood flow to the uterus, boost your energy levels and relieve tiredness. It can also remedy some of the more common ailments of pregnancy like nausea, fatigue or backache. There are also many points that help prevent miscarriage.
See British Acupuncture Council Report on pregnancy

Acupuncture during pregnancy is effective for:
• Nausea
• Hypertension
• Breech and posterior babies
• Labour preparation
• Lower back pain

In the last few weeks of pregnancy it can help to prepare you for the birth in many ways. Overdue babies can be induced with acupuncture to help the labour advance acupuncture can turn breech babies, and prepare the body for an easier shorter, more comfortable birthing experience.

During childbirth acupuncture can help to support the woman and promote a calmer birthing experience, especially when used in combination with a doula as it increases the efficiency of contractions whilst decreasing the pain and anxiety levels. Acupuncture can be used to induce the delivery of the placenta and there is also a reported reduction in blood loss.

If you do not wish to have an acupuncturist present at birth acu-pressure techniques can be taught to people so they can be used during the birth. These techniques can help reduce the pain experienced during labour. We can also provide you with doula recommendations.

Post-partum acupuncture encourages the healing process and restores the mother’s health which is imperative for her own well being and for her ability to be present for her newborn.
Among the conditions that acupuncture can address after birth are:
• Promotes milk production
• Helps with mood swings and alleviates postpartum
• Depression & Postpartum vaginal discharge.
• If there has been a caesarean section, acupuncture can help with the post-operative healing.
